We think this stunning Miniature Cactus, raised by the late Peter Greenway, is a surefire winner. When first shown at Wisley in 2015 in the seedling classes it not only won the G F Crowley Perpetual Challenge Cup for best Small/Miniature Cactus seedling, it also went on to be awarded the Jescot Perpetual Challenge Cup for best Overall seedling. In the 2017 National Dahlia Society’s 2017 Exhibition Dahlia Trials at Golden Acre Park, Leeds, it was awarded the Harry Harry Memorial Medal and an NDS Gold Medal as the top performing variety. In further trials this year with a select number of growers it has won a number of cards, particularly at the Midlands Dahlia Society shows. A relatively easy to grow variety it produce a succession of well formed blooms of orange through to apricot yellow which are more uniform in colour and relatively easy to match than some varieties which are a blend of colours. As with most miniatures, the plants will need double stopping to allow as many breaks (or flowering stems) to develop which will then help to keep the size of the blooms down to the required size. Only a very light disbudding is needed as long as the plants are growing strongly, with only the first pair of buds being removed. As well as being a good exhibition variety it will also be a very useful garden variety due to its strong and free flowering habit as well as the fact the blooms are quite weather resistant.
