Dahlia Zorro – Pot Tuber

£8.95

Giant Decorative. Red. 1.3 m. Suitable for exhibition.

Description

A stunning, free flowering, giant bright red dahlia growing to 1.2 m. For the largest flowers plants should ideally be “stopped” at 4-5 pairs of leaves and the subsequent side shoots reduced to 3 or 4. Ensure plants are well staked and tied in. For general garden use plants can be left undisbudded for an even more stunning display but make sure you carry out regular dead heading. A good variety for garden show as the size and colour of the flowers will WOW the neighbours

Dahlia Pot Tubers

The pot tubers we offer are Dahlias which have been grown for the season in the confines of a 9cm to 12 cm pot, so that a small compact tuber is produced. They are primarily intended for propagation purposes and therefore the ideal material for the exhibitor with a heated greenhouse or propagator who can then take their own cuttings. Some varieties naturally produce smaller tubers than others but all should still give excellent results. Tubers are available from DECEMBER to EARLY MARCH and are wrapped in paper with compost, or, if already sprouting, may be wrapped in paper with moss. Alternatively they can just be used for growing on to produce plants for flowering from late July-August onwards.  Whatever your needs are we strongly advise unpacking on arrival and if necessary store tubers in a cool frost free environment until required for setting away. Check periodically to ensure tubers remain sound and are not dehydrating. A minimum of 50oF ( 10oC ) is required for propagation.

For general garden use, they can be potted into 12.5cm (5”) pots using a good quality, free draining compost and given a light watering in. We would suggest not planting too deeply to start with, leaving the top 1/3 of the tuber exposed.  Root growth should develop soon after, with new growth visible in 3-4 weeks, depending on the temperatures they are grown in. Once growth is visible the pots can be topped up.

Planting out can be done anytime after the risk of frost is over in your area if your tubers have developed lots of growth. If only developing eyes are visible then they can be planted out mid April to mid May as by the time new growth breaks through the soil the risk of frosts should be over.

Should any tuber fail to have shown any signs of growth by the 31st March then please contact us so we can  organise replacements as rooted cuttings.
